Club History
1944 - 1988,
1989-present day
-
The West Country Dog Club was first set up in 1944 with it's first
show being held at the Bath Pavillion.
- In and around 1976 shows were
held at The Pavillion in Bath under Chairman Mr Kinnersley,
Secretary Miss Gallop and Treasurer Miss Woodley
- The 1979 Open show had to be
cancelled due to bad weather conditions as it was felt by the
committee that there would be very poor attendance
- At this point membership stood
at 136 and a total of 47 dogs attended training classes on a
regular basis. These were held at Backwell Village Hall
where they still take place today
- In 1985 WCDC put on it's first
ever Junior Handling classes and they have remained since then
- By 1986 the show venue had
changed to Churchill Sports Centre as it was felt that The
Pavillion was too small. The Committee decided to start
giving prize money and rosettes with the venue change.
Brian Pocock took over as Chairman at this time.
- As the committee were so
committed to serving the exhibitor the following was placed on
the agenda for discussion: the purchase of 3 buckets and a
shovel for use at shows (who says committee's don`t look after
the exhibitors!)
- 1986 saw a change of committee.
Maurice Shortman joined and was at a later date Secretary for a
short time. Brian Pocock left (he is now President of
Bristol and District CS) and the late Audrey Elverd decided to
concentrate on her other club as Secretary for City of Bristol
CS
- In 1988 it was again decided to
change venue, this time to move to a newer and larger venue at
Hutton Moor, Weston Super Mare. This was also the first
time the show had a Show Manager, Mr Elliott.
